Martini Collection

The collection consists of the library of Giuseppe Martini, Professor of Medieval History at the University of Milan and a key figure in the foundation of the Institute of Medieval and Modern History, now the Department of Historical Studies. The collection is supplemented by the Archive.

Giuseppe Martini focused on medieval history and the history of modern religious thought. Among his works on religious history, the most significant is Cattolicesimo e storicismo. Momenti d’una crisi del pensiero religioso moderno (1951), in which he explores the relationship between Catholic thought and the modern historicist tradition. (Source: Dizionario generale degli autori contemporanei, Florence, Vallecchi, 1974, Vol. 2). A volume dedicated to Martini by his former students—Giuseppe Martini. Scritti e testimonianze, Rome: Società editrice Dante Alighieri, 1981—includes a bibliography of his writings, compiled by Professor Liliana Martinelli Perelli (Shelfmark: 10L.01.D. 0118). An excellent introduction to Giuseppe Martini’s work as a historian can be found in the contribution by Professor Gigliola Soldi Rondinini in Felix olim Lombardia. Studi di storia padana dedicati dagli allievi a Giuseppe Martini, Milan, 1978, pp. XI–XLVII (Shelfmark: 10L.05.C. 0121). The Martini archive includes his full body of documents, such as working notes, correspondence and manuscript drafts.
