Theses

The Thesis Archive, managed by the University Library Service, is responsible for preserving, cataloguing, and making available theses submitted at the University of Milan. The thesis catalogue can be accessed online via Minerva. Further details are provided in the relevant sections below.

The Thesis Archive is located at Via Santa Sofia, 9 – first floor. Access is by appointment only, which can be arranged by contacting the following email address: archivio.tesi@unimi.it

Consulting Degree Theses

The Thesis Archive preserves all degree and diploma theses from the pre-reform system, as well as specialist and master’s theses (post-reform system) and those submitted to specialist schools. The catalogue can be searched online via Minerva, with filtering options available by document type.
Access to theses depends on the author’s preferences. As the holder of both moral and economic rights, the author, in agreement with their supervisor, may choose from the following options:

  • Available for consultation
  • Not available for consultation
  • Available after an embargo period

The full text of digital-born theses is accessible through Minerva’s integrated viewer upon login.

Physical copies (paper or microfiche) can be consulted on-site at the Thesis Archive after submitting a request via Minerva.

Users who are not registered in Minerva must contact the Thesis Archive to request access.

Theses are not available for loan, and any form of reproduction is strictly prohibited. Only the author, upon presenting a valid identity document, may request a copy of their own thesis.

Submitting Degree Theses

It is mandatory to deposit a copy of the degree thesis (master’s or single-cycle degree) in accordance with the procedures and deadlines set by each Student Registry. When submitting the graduation application, the author retains copyright and can decide whether to authorise the consultation of their work. The consultation policy may be modified at a later stage by contacting the Thesis Archive. The thesis will remain part of the University’s official records.

Consulting Doctoral Theses

The Thesis Archive preserves all doctoral theses submitted at the University of Milan since the 1990/91 academic year. Up until 31 December 2010, theses were stored in analogue format (paper or microfiche), whereas from 1 January 2011, they have been archived exclusively in electronic format. Consultation methods vary according to the storage format:

  • Consultabile previa autorizzazione (Available upon authorisation): the author has not specified access rights, and the Thesis Archive will contact them.
  • Non consultabile (Not available for consultation): the author has denied access.

Theses are not available for loan, and any form of reproduction is strictly prohibited.

Electronic Format Theses

The catalogue is accessible via the Institutional Research Archive (IRIS-AIR) and includes both the bibliographic record and, where available, the full text.
Theses can be consulted online through IRIS-AIR.
As not all theses are accessible, users should refer to the icons indicating full-text availability.

Mandatory Submission of Doctoral Theses

The submission of a copy of the doctoral thesis to the National Libraries of Florence and Rome is a legal requirement and a prerequisite for obtaining the doctoral certificate.
From the 25th doctoral cycle onwards, this obligation is fulfilled through self-archiving the full text within the Institutional Research Archive (AIR).
The two National Libraries will then retrieve copies directly via harvesting.
For doctoral candidates from cycles up to the 24th, submission must still be completed in the traditional manner by delivering the following to the Thesis Archive (University Library Service):

  • Two bound paper copies of the doctoral thesis
  • Two completed personal information forms

The Thesis Archive will then forward the copies to the National Libraries of Florence and Rome.
The Thesis Archive is accessible by appointment only. To arrange an appointment, please contact: archivio.tesi@unimi.it
