Bibliographic Information (Reference Services)

How to get assistance for bibliographic research 

The libraries offer personalised assistance for specialist bibliographic research for academic papers and theses.

They also provide guidance on the advanced use of catalogues and other bibliographic research tools, both in print and online, to help users compile bibliographies and locate books and academic articles.

This service is available to students, researchers, academic staff, and all University personnel. 

How does it work?

To request an appointment, please contact your reference library by email, via an online form (if available), or by visiting the library’s help desk during opening hours. When submitting a request, please include details of your thesis title and/or the topics you wish to explore. 

For particularly complex research, users must schedule an appointment by emailing egittologia@unimi.it, providing details on their dissertation title, and/or research topics.

A bibliographic information service is available to users at different levels:

  • Locating materials (books and serials) within the library
  • Locating materials available in other Italian and international libraries
  • Assisted bibliographic research on databases. Appointment required; contact angela.moccia@unimi.it 

For particularly complex research, users must schedule an appointment by emailing lingue.reference@unimi.it, providing details on their degree programme (Master’s or Bachelor’s), dissertation title, and/or research topics.
Consultations can also be held remotely.

Users may visit the circulation desk for assistance in locating documents. However, for more in-depth research (e.g. dissertation-related searches), it is advisable to book an appointment with a librarian for tailored support. To access the service, please send a request to bibliomedia@unimi.it

  • Consulting the University Catalogue
  • Accessing the Digital Library (resources for Political and Social Sciences)
  • Navigating the internet for exclusively bibliographic research

In addition to regular courses on the GeoRef and GeoScienceWorld databases offered as part of the University Library System (SBA) programme, the library can organise introductory sessions on bibliographic research within the university network, with a particular focus on geological information resources. These sessions can be arranged upon request for small groups or individual users.   • Personalised research strategy development
  • Retrieval of information and documents
  • Support, particularly for dissertation students, in conducting bibliographic research via Minerva and other catalogues, directories, printed and digital resources of the University in the legal and humanities fields

If you require support for conducting a bibliographic search for your dissertation or for biomedical research purposes, you can contact the medical libraries through an online form.
Each library has its own schedule with different dates and times.
Once you have chosen the most convenient library, click on the corresponding link under the title “Book an appointment“ and specify the relevant details in the “Motivo dell'appuntamento" (Reason for appointment) field:

  • Title of the dissertation and/or topics to explore
  • Keywords or any relevant documents already found
  • Research tools already used or intended for use (e.g. which databases or journals have already been consulted)

For University of Milan users: it is advisable to enter your university email address in the “Email“ field to facilitate the confirmation process.
Please book only one appointment at a time; it is not recommended to visit multiple libraries for the same research. If further appointments are needed, they should preferably be scheduled at the same library as the first.

There is no need to contact library staff via email or telephone, as the online form serves as the direct point of contact with the service. After booking an appointment, please check your email for confirmation messages or further communications.

Searches will be conducted remotely via Microsoft Teams, with the library contacting users at the scheduled date and time.
